Class Piano is designed for the student with no piano experience. Students will begin the school year in
a classroom style setting to learn all of the basics of music including (but not limited to) note names,
staff, treble clef, bass clef, time signature, whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, sixteenth
note and their corresponding rests. Other concepts and symbols will be taught at this time as well.
Once the students understand the basic concepts of music theory they will then be moved to the
keyboards. The first week of playing the keyboards will be spent playing without headphones as a
group. All students must be able to play provided music and keep a steady beat; knowing which note
names are assigned to which keys on the piano. Once all students are aware of the basic keyboard
concepts they will use headphone and practice music from their piano lesson book.
This is a self-paced class that will provide students to practice on a daily basis to the best of their ability.
The teacher will circulate around the room, listening to students playing their lessons. When they have
their music prepared and are ready to play they will unplug their headphone and perform. If the
selection is played with 98% accuracy the student will then be assigned the next page in the lesson book.
New concepts for the next song will be taught and the student will then begin practicing again.
By the end of this course, the successful student will be able to:
1. Understand fundamental musical concepts through playing the piano.
2. Know the note names on both the treble and bass clefs.
3. Play with rhythmic accuracy.
4. Identify key signatures/hand postions.
5. Know the basic musical terms and symbols essential to playing beginning piano music.
